Scam artists are targeting veterans claiming that they can help them get instant eligibility or additional benefits for a fee. In many cases, this turns out to be a scam.
In fact, many of the services these scammers charge for are offered free of charge by local veteran associations.
If you're a vet, here's what else you should know:
- Don't be fooled by official-sounding names. Many scam artists falsely claim they have a veteran affiliation and nonprofit status.
- Be wary of organizations and individuals who contact you unsolicited.
- Get credible information on how to qualify for veterans benefits by contacting the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs at http://www.dva.wa.gov/ or 1-800-562-0132
