Washington Consumer Protection – Helping Homeowners Avoid Losing Their Home

It’s National Consumer Protection Week. Each day this week I will be featuring one of the many ways the Washington Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) helps protect you and your money.

Today, I feature how DFI provides information and resources to Washington homeowners who are having trouble making their mortgage payment.

In 2008, DFI launched a Washington Homeownership Web site, http://www.homeownership.wa.gov/. The Web site is a one stop resource center for homeownership and foreclosure information.

The Web site features information about:
  • What to do if you’re late making your mortgage payment
  • Programs and assistance available to help you keep your home
  • Upcoming events where you can talk with lenders and housing counselors
  • Possible alternatives to foreclosure
  • Avoiding foreclosure rescue scams
  • And much more
Check out the Web site at http://www.homeownership.wa.gov/.

Additionally, DFI staff has helped local organizations in planning foreclosure assistance events across Washington. DFI helped promote the events as well as provide resources and volunteers.

This blog wraps up Consumer Protection Week at DFI.

Recap of Ways DFI Helps Protect Washington Consumers
  1. By Licensing and Registering Financial Institutions and Professionals
  2. By Reviewing Complaints Against Financial Institutions and Individuals
  3. By Providing Fraud Alerts to Washington Residents
  4. By Providing Free Resources to Washington Residents
  5. By Providing Information That Helps Homeowners Keep Their Homes
